Which course would be better for me?If you: Want to become a health coach but have no previous training OR Have completed some health behaviour change, health coaching or motivational interviewing study but are still at a basic level Would benefit from participating in live webinars or face to face training to get feedback about where you can improve Then our specialist course is the one for you! If you: Have completed some training in health coaching or motivational interviewing and may use this in your practice - but need to build confidence and know developing your skills would be beneficial Have you trained or been practising as a health coach but are not eligible for HCANZA professional membership? (ie. you need additional hours of live health coach training and/or to complete an assessment) then our mastery course is the one for you!

What’s the format of the Health Coach Specialist and the Health Coach Mastery Courses?Both courses are fully online, with self-paced online modules available immediately upon registration. Online content is brought to life with live interactive weekly webinars where you practise skills with peers and receive feedback. These webinars are via zoom.

What can I expect from the Health Coach Specialist Course?This course is aimed at health and fitness professionals as well as health-passionate individuals who want to learn how to support clients to change behaviours and habits using a coaching approach. You’ll gain a practical, evidence-based toolkit of behaviour change skills to help clients who aren’t motivated, aren’t listening, or know what to do but aren’t taking action. You’ll learn how to communicate effectively, tap into motivation, develop a positive mindset, overcome barriers, create actionable goals, and support lasting change.

What can I expect from the Health Coach Mastery Course?The Health Coach Mastery Course builds on the skills learnt in the Health Coach Specialist training. The focus is on developing foundation coaching competencies to a mastery level. There is weekly coaching practice, discussion of case studies, as well as addressing practical topics such as group coaching, a business skills. Completion of this course along with an assessment against the HCANZA competencies provides graduates the opportunity to join HCANZA as professional members getting national recognition and insurance.

Do I need to be a health professional to study with you?The Health Coach Specialist and Health Coach Mastery Courses focus on the skills of coaching only, and benefit anyone who works with helping people change their behaviours. In order to be accredited with HCANZA you need around 50 hours of training in health, and we provide this as an optional course for those who do not have a health background. There is no extra cost for this course however you are required to complete an assessment to satisfy HCANZA requirements.

I’m already a health professional — do I still need to study coaching?Yes. Coaching is a distinct set of competencies, and coach training often requires that you ‘unlearn’ the traditional approach that we are taught as health professionals. Our health coach training courses incorporate evidence-based health behaviour change interventions such as motivational interviewing, positive psychology, the transtheoretical model, and health and coaching psychology to help you support clients in achieving sustainable health behaviours and outcomes.

I’ve learned Motivational Interviewing — is that the same as coaching?No. While motivational Interviewing is an essential foundation skill used in health coaching, health coaching incorporates a number of additional evidence-based models such as positive psychology, Habit change and Cognitive based coaching. This is required to meet HCANZA national standards.

Do I have to attend the live sessions?If you want HCANZA accreditation — yes, attendance is required. If you’re studying for personal interest, you can complete the course in your own time and watch the recordings of the webinars.

Who teaches the health coaching courses?All sessions are taught by the founders — Sharon Curtain and Shivaun Conn — both dietitians, HCANZA-accredited health coaches, and VET-accredited trainers, with over 50 years’ combined experience.

Do you offer fully self-paced courses?Yes. Creating Change in 15 Minute Consults is a fully self-paced online course designed for health professionals in limited time settings.

Do I need coach training if I have lots of life experience?Yes. Coaching is a specific set of competencies. In order to get insurance to practise as a health coach in Australia or New Zealand, you must be accredited by the Health Coaches Australia & New Zealand Association (HCANZA). To gain accreditation, you must complete an approved course — such as ours — and be able to demonstrate that you meet the HCANZA Coaching Competencies.

I’ve been practising for years — do I need more training?Possibly. HCANZA has specific competency and training-hour requirements for accreditation. Even experienced coaches may need gap training to meet these. Our role is to help you get there with the least amount of extra study possible.

Do you offer gap training for experienced coaches?Yes. If you already have strong coaching foundation skills, you may be eligible to enter directly into our Health Coach Mastery Course without completing the Health Coach Specialist. We’ll assess your training and experience, then recommend the most direct pathway to HCANZA accreditation.

What is your Assessment-Only Service?For experienced health coaches seeking HCANZA certification without repeating unnecessary training, we offer an assessment pathway in partnership with HCANZA. This process: Assesses your competency against the HCANZA Coaching Competencies Identifies any gaps Issues a Certificate of Assessment for HCANZA certification once you meet the standards If minor gaps are found, we’ll recommend targeted training to address them.

When can I start?You can enrol at any time for self-paced courses. For live courses, check our website for the next intake dates.

How much time will I need to commit?Time requirements vary — self-paced courses are flexible, while the Specialist and Mastery have live webinars (totally 20-22 hours per course) as well as around 20 hours of online learning. We’ll give you a clear schedule before you start.

Will I have support during the course?Yes — our trainers are dietitians, health coaches, and VET-qualified trainers and assessors. You’ll have access to support during the live webinars, and additional Thursday night practice sessions, you can access the trainers by email at any time, and will receive 1:1 coaching feedback throughout the course. We are very accessible and always happy to jump on a call or zoom to help with technical issues or other support you need.

Will I be able to get insurance after completing your course?If you complete an HCANZA-approved course with us and meet all competency requirements, you’ll be eligible for professional membership with HCANZA, which enables you to get insurance as a health coach.

What technology do I need for the live webinars?A reliable internet connection, Zoom, a computer or device with a webcam and a microphone.

Will the course allow me to become accredited with the Health Coaches Australia New Zealand Association (HCANZA)?Yes — Completing both the Specialist and the Health Coach Mastery Course (including the assessment) makes you eligible for HCANZA professional membership.
