Communication to Facilitate Behaviour Change

Course Outline

As health professionals, we pride ourselves on being good communicators. We spend our days talking to clients, asking questions, and offering advice. But here’s a question worth reflecting on: are we truly listening - or are we simply gathering information to make decisions? In traditional healthcare interactions, communication is often practitioner-led. We listen for the facts we need, ask questions to meet clinical requirements, and quickly formulate what we believe the client needs next. But this style of communication, while efficient, often misses the deeper opportunity to connect, empower, and truly understand the person in front of us. Health coaching challenges us to communicate differently. It invites us to shift from problem-solving to active listening, from ticking boxes to curious inquiry, and from directing to collaborating. So we invite you to pause and ask yourself: Are you really listening to your clients - or just listening for what you need to know? How might your conversations change if you listened more deeply, asked differently, and responded with greater curiosity and care? This training will explore simple, powerful micro-counselling skills that can transform how you connect with clients — and how they connect with themselves.
